There are dozens of ways to look at rules for poker games, and many sources for the rules that will help us understand this classic game. But it's important to break this subject down a little, getting to the basics that will let almost anyone get involved.

With the exploding popularity of poker in recent years, a number of sources offer some basics that can apply to all forms of poker. For example, the respected magazine, Card Player offers such guidelines as how to shuffle and cut before cards are dealt, and how to protect the bottom of the deck so that a card is not exposed.

The rules of poker also include definite directions on how to proceed on a misdeal. Misdeal situations can include having cards exposed during the deal, as well as dealing in the wrong order or dealing the wrong number of cards to a player. In rules for poker games, there can also be a "dead hand," which may occur when a player declares he is folding or actually folds his hand by turning them face down or tossing them to the center of the table.

Official rules for poker games also cover irregularities such as discovering a card with a different color back is in the deck. It's interesting to note that, according to Card Player and many other rule systems, one or more cards missing from the deck does not invalidate the results of a hand.

Of course, the use of money in poker is, and must be, covered by some specific rules for poker games. One of these involves the amount of money necessary for each player to begin the game. This "buy-in" can be set according to agreement among the players in a private game, by the poker room director in a live casino, or by the director of an online poker site. As for betting and raising during a game, keep this in mind - most places, both live and online, consider check-raising to be a common action. In other words, a player can check, to wait and see what others are going to do. If a following player bets, the player who checked may raise that bet.

For the purpose of general poker rules, the amount of raise allowed depends on whether the game is limit or unlimited. Players should always be completely clear on this before starting to play. For example, in a limit poker game, a player might be allowed to raise a set amount or only the amount that is in the pot (center of table). During the process of betting or raising, a verbal statement is considered to be the same as having made the bet or raise. If a player knocks on the table with the knuckles, this is meant to indicate that he or she passes or is ready for the next card to be dealt.

One of the critical rules for poker games is the showdown. Simply put, a player must show all of his or her cards to win any of the pot. It is generally accepted that displayed cards speak for themselves. A dealer may assist with reading hands, but players involved in the hand must agree based on what they see. Suits (spades, diamonds, hearts, clubs) are generally not used to break a tie, except in some particular types of games.

Keep the following idea among rules for poker games in mind: Any player who has been dealt in can request to see any hand that has been called, even if the opponent's hand or the winning hand has been mucked. However, this is a privilege that can be revoked if abused. Make sure this is understood and the rule is used, or specifically not used, where you play.

There are, of course, some rules for poker games that apply to specific varieties, such as Texas Hold 'Em poker rules, or Omaha poker rules. In these games, there are forced bets, called blinds, designed to start the betting and build a pot. With Hold 'Em and Omaha, the process of dealing cards is generally the same, though in Omaha, each player must use only two of their four hole cards to make a hand. In Hold 'Em, players have two hole cards and use any combination with the community cards. Pai Gow poker rules are a bit different, because the game is structured much differently.

The rank of hands in Pai Gow is generally the same as other poker varieties, though a joker is used as a wild card and the A-2-3-4-5 straight is the second-highest straight or straight flush. Players arrange cards for a five-card hand and a two-card hand. The five-card hand must be higher than the two-card hand. The dealer has seven cards arranged in to a five-card and a two-card hand.

Books have been written on the subject of rules for poker games, but this summary should help anyone get a feel for the guidelines of this great game.
