Roulette Rules: Take a Few Minutes to Get Started

One key to roulette rules, or the rules of any casino game, is to understand how the game is structured and what the parts of the roulette game are. Maybe the first thing a player should try when new to casino roulette is get to know the online site or become comfortable with the live casino table.

The roulette game generally has minimum and maximum bets, depending on the casino and the individual table. Enjoyment of any casino game depends on finding a comfortable betting level. Once you feel you have chosen the right table and level for you, the next step would be to see if the game you are interested in is European roulette or American roulette. (The American version will have a double zero space on the wheel, while European roulette will have only the single zero.)

This is important because the casino or “house” advantage is a bit better for the player in European roulette.

At this point the player should know a few basic roulette rules in order to get started. Based on the almost pure luck of the ball settling on a number or color chosen, roulette rules state that a player must declare a number, a series of numbers or a color by placing a chip on that space. This is done online, of course, by clicking on that space with the mouse pointer.

Players may choose a single number, a series of numbers such as 1 through 12, or may even bet that the ball will settle on red or black, odd or even. Casino rules state that the space hardest to hit, a single number, will pay the most. Groups such as odd or even, or all the red or all the black, will pay less. For example, you could be paid 35 to 1 for hitting a single number, while betting on a string of numbers such as 1 through 12 might pay only 2 to 1.

Two areas to understand with roulette rules are inside bets/outside bets and en prison. Inside bets are those that involve numbers, while outside best involve color or odd/even. Those new to roulette should look the table and wheel layout carefully before beginning.

En prison is often used with European roulette. This rule states that, if the ball settles on a zero, the player may choose en prison, getting back half of the wager or setting it aside for the next spin. In this case, when a zero hits on the following spin, the player loses the wager.

Roulette rules usually refer to the way that bets are placed. In a live casino, it is very important to make the bet in plenty of time and to make sure the “dealer” is clear as to what your bet is. With online roulette, the individual player has a little more control of the pace because it is up to the player to click on the “play” or “spin” button.

One of the key roulette rules, which also might qualify as a strategy, is to keep in mind that the player is not competing against the casino or the “dealer.” This is much different from blackjack, in which the dealer’s hand is the key to winning or losing. Each player should be doing his or her best to profit from time spent at roulette.
