Poker Tips Can Make You a Winning Player

These hints and suggestions may make the difference between losing and breaking even, and may even propel the new player to a winning level.

Here's a basic idea that applies to life just as much as it does to poker tips. When you have a healthy diet and sleep well, the cards seem to improve. It's not magic. It just means that you can make better decisions and be more aware of the other players and the flow of the game.

This leads to another of the basic tips that can make vast improvement in your poker game. Successful poker is about making good decisions. It doesn't matter if you follow legends such as Doyle Brunson and Chris Ferguson, or try to imitate the style of another great player, the books and instructional material will mention this gem of poker tips somewhere.

Major poker tip: This one will usually come up in any situation where poker is discussed or is being taught. Poker is a people game, even though it's played with cards. But what does this really mean? You have to know the other players, try to understand how they bet, which hands they play etc. Of course you need to know the rank of hands perfectly to know when you have winning poker hands, and it certainly helps to be able to figure out what the chances are of you catching the cards you need (poker odds – see Poker Strategy). But so much of playing poker depends on getting a good idea of how the game is being played, at the current table, by the people who are sitting with you.

Poker experts David Sklansky and Lou Krieger put emphasis on the "gap." Players need a much bigger hand to call a raise than they do to make the raise. This may seem like one of the advanced poker tips, but it really should be among the first keys that players apply to unlock the door of poker success. Understanding the gap "between hands that are worth betting or raising and those that can call a bet or raise" is how Krieger puts it in Secrets the Pros Won't Tell You About Winning Hold 'Em Poker [Kensington Publishing Corp. 2006 Lou Krieger and Sheree Bykofsky].

Though it's been stated several ways, this king of poker tips should be part of every playbook. Fold more often, maybe even more hands than you play. This doesn't mean you can't be aggressive in certain situations, or that you can't play a few extra pots if you are in the game for fun. It's just a general rule to get you to be selective about when you risk your money. It works, try it!

One of the best tips a beginning player can take to heart, and one that is always in the mind of a top player is: Position, position, position!! Every player should constantly be aware of where he or she sits in relation to the betting. Being able to make your decision after several players have already bet, called or folded means you can decide using more information than if you had to act first. It's wise to think in terms of early position, middle position and late position.

To tie up this brief summary of some good poker tips, keep these two pieces of gold in mind: Know which starting hands are good in each situation; play in games that are comfortable for you financially. Nothing is guaranteed to make you a winning professional poker player. But making use of these simple tips should certainly improve your game.
