Learn Keno and Have Fun

Keno has been compared to other parlor and casino games such as bingo, and has sometimes been called a lottery game. People who are familiar with the drawing of numbers in a state lottery will know something about this game. The traditional game involves the drawing of 20 numbers by pulling numbered balls (similar to ping-pong balls).

Just as bingo games uses 75 balls or 90 balls for instance, traditional keno uses a range of 80 numbers. Players generally pick 10 numbers and wait to see if any of these choices match with the 20 numbers pulled or selected by automatic equipment.

In the classic version of the game players mark numbers on a paper ticket as these numbers are called. One casino’s pay schedule may differ slightly from another, but in general, payouts are made based on how many numbers marked on a ticket match what is called. The casino advantage (house edge) on most games usually starts between 0 and 5 percent and goes up. The edge in keno can be quite a bit higher.

The name of this game comes from Latin and French, usually associated with “quine.” or “quini.” These words have to do with five numbers or the number five. But history records that some form of the game was played thousands of years ago in China. The game may have traveled to the United States, especially the western states, when immigrants from China helped build railroads.

Video versions has become quite popular in recent years, as the game transfers well to machine-based and online play. In fact, many live casinos have closed down the live games, which once had large boards or screens on the wall and a seating area for those waiting to hear the numbers called.

With the introduction of computer technology, the action is sometimes conducted by having players choose numbers and then watching a television screen or big screen to see which 20 numbers are selected. The computer software used by casinos and other operators rotates through a massive series of randomly selected sets of 20 numbers.

Many people enjoy keno because it is so easy to play, much like bingo, but doesn’t take the dedication of an entire evening. This is not a major social event like bingo and can be played anytime. The player can wager various amounts, can play one ticket and leave, or stay around the area and play as often as he or she likes. Amounts won can also vary, from a few dollars to thousands in one prize.

Many video keno areas in casinos call a new set of 20 numbers every few minutes, so the game is available to someone just passing by who wants to bet a small amount. For example, some games give out $10,000 for matching eight numbers and $25 for matching three.
