Try the Fast and Exciting Game of Online Craps

The exciting game, craps, has roots in the aptly named betting game of hazard, as most histories show. The current name is apparently traced to the pronunciation of “crabs.” That term is a nickname for the old game of hazard.  As with poker, the history of the game can be traced back through the French and the people of French heritage who came to the United States and settled in Louisiana.

In fact, the history of hazard is very similar to that of poker, since both games owe much of their popularity to players on Mississippi steamboats. A man named John Winn is credited with a major change in the game with the introduction of “right” and “wrong” bets and the “Don’t Pass” line.

Going back even further in the history of craps, narratives record that Roman soldiers used knucklebones from hogs that were shaped so they could be rolled in a way similar to the way dice are used today. The game has enjoyed a comeback in terms of popularity, even with the explosion of slots and other casino games, both live and online.

Many people have avoided trying this enjoyable game because they feel that the table looks too complicated. But the truth is that, once a player learns a few basic rules, the game is not so complex.

Play is started by a shooter who tosses the dice for a come-out roll. If the dice show 7 or 11 he and those who placed their bets with the shooter will win. However, a 2, 3 or 12 is a loss (craps) for the shooter and the players who bet with the shooter.

Dice totals of the remaining numbers are the “point.” The shooter continues to roll until he hits that number again. If he rolls 7 before hitting his point number he loses. The lingo for this is “sevens out.” Dice are passed clockwise around the table. That’s the basic pattern, though the complication comes with the many different types of bets that can be made.

Those who are a bit timid about walking up to a craps table in live casino and betting money when they don’t truly understand the game may want to try one of the many free online games available. These casino sites have great software that gives the online craps game a feel of reality. In addition, beginners may learn tips and rules as they play with the chat capability of online casinos. Most online craps games require a simple click of the mouse on the chips that a player wants to bet. A second click can put the chips on the number or line for the wager. A third click “rolls” the dice. It may take a little time to learn all the ways that a player can bet in casino craps, but craps is a game that anyone can enjoy from the very start.
