Actually, the official blackjack rules are quite simple. To a beginner, or to an observer with no experience at the game, the movements and decisions may seem complex. But the truth is, most of the mystery surrounding blackjack can be attributed to the decisions a player makes based on strategy. The rules are quite simple to learn.

While each casino or casino Web site may have some slight differences in guidelines, the official blackjack rules will carry a player from one casino to another and from one table to another. However, make sure you understand the requirement for buying into a game or onto a table. Some people suggest a guideline of buying about 15 or 20 times your average bet.
Once you have your chips and sit down, the first rule a new player needs to know is how to properly place a bet. Blackjack tables contain a circle or perhaps a box in front of each seat that is part of the design of the table. This is where you are to place bets (larger denomination chips on the bottom of a stack). After the cards are dealt, you may not touch your bet. The dealer will collect unsuccessful bets and pay any winners.

The official rules of blackjack indicate that the player whose cards total 21 or closest to it without going over is a winner provided the dealer doesn’t have a better hand. This is a key item in the list of blackjack rules. Players are playing against the dealer, except in a tournament setting, where one player can win enough to stay in while another is eliminated.
Among the official blackjack rules in a standard hand, whether it’s blackjack online or at live blackjack tables, is that the dealer must do certain things with certain cards. In fact, as a player approaches a table for the first time, he or she may see a sign that states the dealer must stand on 17 or must hit on all 16s and below. This can vary from one casino to another and within a casino as well.

In a casino game that uses a shoe to hold multiple decks, cards are dealt face up onto the table and players are not allowed to touch them or pick them up. The player must indicate that another card is needed by tapping the table lightly or making a motion that the dealer will understand means another card should be dealt. A player usually waves his hand over his cards briefly to indicate he is standing on what he has.

Among the official blackjack rules, the rank or value of cards is set and consistent. Cards from 2 through 10 are worth their face value, while face cards count 10. An Ace may be used as a one or 11. A player who has temporarily counted an Ace as 11, then takes another card to make the total go over 21, should then count the Ace as one (to avoid busting).

The dealer’s hand is dealt one card down and one card face up. Decisions on whether to take another card (hit) or stay with the hand (stand) is based on a number of things, but primarily on the two cards a player has and on the one card the players can see at the dealer position. Some casinos, usually in Europe, give the dealer one card face up until all the players finish their hands by making hit or stand decisions. Then the dealer gets a second card face down.

Here is a brief summary of terms that are also part of official blackjack rules:

Those are the basic official blackjack rules. There are only a few and they are quite easy to learn and use. Smart play and strategy are a horse of a different color.

Quick Blackjack Tips

"Beat the dealer – Except in a tournament situation, there is little incentive to “beat” the other players. The object of blackjack is to beat the dealer."
