As newcomers learn how to play keno, they find one of the real attractions is that the game is so easy to play, and easy to play anywhere. The game doesn’t require a lot of expensive equipment, though it is set up to be played by computer in casinos and bars, even restaurants and in the home.
Traditionally keno was played in live casinos such as those in Las Vegas and Reno. Players chose 10 numbers, marked them on a paper ticket and waited to see what numbers came up on the big board in the keno area. In most cases, the marked card was exchanged at the booth for a ticket with the chosen numbers on it. Sometimes a casino employee called a runner took the customer’s ticket to the booth. This same runner would then bring the printed voucher/ticket back to the customer (who usually waited in a seating area watching the big board).
Learning how to play keno is quite easy, especially since the keno game basics have not changed. But the way the game operates is much different today than it was just a few years ago. Of course, winning at keno is still accomplished the same way, by choosing numbers and waiting for those numbers to be pulled or to come up on a screen. (similar to a lottery).
However, in recent years, computers and video screens have taken on much of the “ work ” in keno. Keno results are now often displayed on the screen and payouts are then made according to the pay table. This pay schedule can vary quite a bit from one place to another. But in video keno, the player simply touches a screen to choose numbers and waits to see what the payouts will be. Video keno moves quite a bit faster since the manual marking of tickets and the running of tickets to the booth and back are eliminated.
Beyond picking numbers, there is very little can be done to affect the outcome of the game of keno. The game is best looked at as an enjoyable pastime, with little time spent trying to find a system or a strategy for better keno results. So, as you learn how to play keno, it’s best to concentrate on socializing with other players, pick your favorite numbers and then relax and enjoy.
As a newcomer learns how to play keno, it will probably help to learn some of the lingo of the game, such as “ race. ” This is the term given to a round or keno and in some places there are multi-race games that add to the excitement. Each number picked by a player is called a “ spot. ” So games will usually be referred to as four-spot, eight-spot and so on. But newcomers are urged not to look at keno as a good bet or way to make money. The chance of hitting one of 80 numbers is, of course, only a fraction of a percent. The house advantage is huge with keno.
"Pick fewer numbers – Keno is a game of mathematical odds, like many other casino games. Choosing less than 10 numbers should give you a better chance at winning."
