Stick With the Fundamentals: A Successful Craps Strategy

There are some basic ideas under the craps strategy umbrella that will serve players at all levels of experience. After a newcomer learns the few basic rules and guidelines for play, these fundamental strategic moves may help you to be more successful at the craps table.

The first tip among best craps strategy is to relax and enjoy yourself, because craps is an exciting game in which many of the players around the table are cheering for the same thing. It’s also a lot of fun to learn the lingo or slang that is applied to some of the bets and results in craps.

The next craps strategy tip involves knowing the basic etiquette and types of bets so that you can start playing comfortably right away. This is possible now because of the many free or play-chip games available online. Many beginning players use these free casino games to learn the different types of bets and to become familiar with the layout of a standard craps table.

Experienced players who know the craps odds advise newcomers to know the Pass and Don’t Pass bets right away. A bet placed on the Pass line means the player is wagering that the shooter will win. These bets pay 1 to 1 odds. In addition, the Pass bet has a relatively low house edge, making it a nice choice for the player.

Putting chips on the Don’t Pass line means that you are betting the person who rolls the dice (shooter) will lose. These bets pay even money too. Craps strategy tip: Find out if the casino does not pay Don’t Pass bets if the shooter rolls 12 or 2 for the “come out” roll. This is a push (tie). The Bar line on the table might provide the information you need for this decision.

Know your craps odds. This is probably the most important part of craps strategy. As with any casino game, the goal is not necessarily to win a lot of money immediately. In fact, most experienced gamblers teach that the goal is to make good decisions at each juncture. Best other than the Pass and Don’t Pass lines have significant casino advantages ranging from 5 percent to 16 percent in many cases. Strategy should include select times for placing those high-cost bets.

One of the key craps strategies for improving bets in craps is the odds bet. This is not clearly marked on the table nor is it standard procedure for the casino to inform players of their options in this area. The best strategy involves making a supplemental (additional) bet for the Pass or Don’t Pass bet after you get past the come-out roll. Pros say this is a smart bet because it cuts house odds.

There are a number of craps system strategies being taught, both online and in live seminars. These are almost always based on methods of betting and on maintaining the bankroll over time. For example, one system teaches making bets at your comfort level on the 6 and on the 8. Complete explanations of these betting systems come in book form. For the recreational player, craps strategy should involve knowing the basic rules, the four basic bets and having a minimum/maximum betting schedule. Then it’s time to learn while doing.
